I have wine all setup and happily working. I have some directx games that i would like to play, so i need winex. However, i don't want to install winex system wide cause then it will overwrite my current working version of wine. Heres my problem, i compiled everything but i can't run it. The error i get is: error while loading shared libraries: libntdll.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. (i do have the file). When i was compiling it, it told me that i needed to edit my LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. I did this: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/home/<username>/winex/wine:/home/<username>/winex/wine/dlls
but i still get the error.

So, anyone know how i'm screwing up?

Rather than adding the directories to LD_LIBRARY_PATH, you could try adding them to /etc/ld.so.conf (and re-running ldconfig). Add one directory per line, and you need to be root to do this.

i don't think winex overwrites wine. They were suppose to live side by side.
i could be wrong.
i have both installed with no conflicts whatsoever.

thx, i'll try that /etc/ld.so.conf thing.

vhg119, do you have 1 exectuable called wine and another winex? I finally broke down and did the ./tools/wineinstall (for winex) as root and now the only executable i have is wine, so i'm guessing that the earlier wine was overwrittian.

hmm.. i downloaded the prepackaged rpm. and it just installed winex alongside wine.. i have both executables. and they both operate fine.

Prepackaged is the key. Give up the 5 bucks. Support the linux community. I dowloaded the RPM's andboth wine and WINEX runs beautifully.

Just a question, do they provide anything other than RPMs to subscribers? (I mean in terms of packages, I know that you also get to vote for game support and whatnot)

Transgaming is a good group, the $5/month will get you the pre-packaged binaries (I hear compiling them by hand could possably mess up wine), you get to vote on what you want them to work on (DirectX 8.0 please!!) and the online support is not too bad. There are a few bad things about the site, but they are new and will get it cleaned up sooner or later (the forums are impossible to search without a search option) and the site in general looks sloppy :)

Support them ,give up the cash! If they get 20,000 subscribers they will start working directly with wine and open the source.

The precompiled binaries have a few things like support for some safe disc formats that some games are in.
