I have the 1997 version of L:TCR. I haven't seen the new version, but the 1997 version was effectively a collection of every Linux HOWTO stuffed into a gigantic paperback tome.

A printout of every HOWTO is nice to have, but you can read every one of them online at http://www.linuxdoc.org/docs.html#howto, so buy the book if that's what you want, but keep in mind that you can download all the material in the book as a single 5MB .tar.gz file.

The 1997 version is 2000 pages. I guess Linux has gotten simpler. :)

Whoa, cool, how many pages is it?

1997 -> 2001 it shrunk by 750 pages. I'm wondering if it started out big and has been constantly shrinking, or if it started out small then spiked then shrunk again...

Oh, it's not a book, it's a 4 cd set. If it came with a book I don't have it. I got it second-hand.

You're right. My 1997 book came with a 4 (6?) CD set also. I think you could get the book without the CDs, but you could only get the CDs with the book. Somebody probably decided to pawn the CDs and keep the book -- that's what I did with mine. :)
