I posted some history about this at the Tinyminds site as well...

It BSOD'd on me, and would not boot again after that. It Won't do a POST when powered up. I took it in to the Gateway Store, and they want to send it to TX to have the mainboard replaced (for the price given); that's all they told me.

There's nothing else wrong with the laptop; I was preparing to sell it when it croaked. If you'd like to make me an offer, you should do so here in this thread. I've closed off my E-mail address to LNO once again; here's why...

Yesterday, someone sent a "phantom" email to me about this ad. Phantom meaning that their return address wasn't any good. My system had been compromised by an email bomb before, so I'm afraid I can't trust this any further than to negotiate here in the open forum. The person may not have had any melicious intent, but I don't like the idea of getting mail, and not being able to return it.

hmmmm....you want $500 for it, and then it needs a $300 mobo replacement. Plus s/h. that puts it at almost $900.

i'll give ya $50.00.

:D

if that's the 3C905CX-TXM then you can get it on pricewatch.com for 36 bucks.

maybe you need to be more specific about what the card is (for a laptop or something?) or lower the price.

i'm sorry you have a gateway (i do phone tech support for their desktops - outsourcer). they WAY overprice their parts unless you get them online or thru spotshop or something.....they're an evil evil corporation.

Yeah... I only had this machine for a year and 10 months. I'm hoping to get some money out of it (though no offers have come yet). Figuring the "back to school" time of year, I thought I would get a few offers at least. Guess I'll put an ad in the paper next.

This is the current status:

I'm in the process of trying to get the data off of the hard drive (not as easy as I thought it would be). Also, it has not been established whether the HD is what actually croaked; but I'll know that in a few days.

The short answer to your question is no, it doesn't work right now. When it BSOD'd, and died, I took it to the local Gateway Country Store to assess what's up. They then gave me an estimate of $300 to send it to their repair facility in Irving, TX to have it repaired there. I assumed that, because the boot failure is before the POST test, the HD should be fine (which remains to be seen right now), and that it's the mainboard that died; is my assumption anyway. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the rest of the machine (LCD, floppy, DVD, PCMCIA & all other ports... ).

If bought from me, and then repaired by Gateway, you have a working, 2 year old laptop for ~$500 + S&H all around. Buy the whole outfit, and have the laptop repaired, and you're out ~$700 + S&H. Doesn't sound like a bad deal to me, but who cares what I think :p ;). Nothing was abused, or dropped; I take very good care of my stuff :).

mmm, one easy way, get a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter from compgeeks (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HD-108) for $3.65 (shipping will cost you more) and then plug it into the secondary ide channel on a desktop boxen, boot it up, copy from the laptop drive :)

Thanks FoBot. That's the exact kit I got ($12 from Cables 'N More  ). My box is not recognizing the drive at all (yes I played around with the bios also). I'm thinking that the drive needs a jumper to tell it that it's slave. There are 4 pins off to the side, where such a jumper could be placed. I'm also worried that the off pin on the IDE cable (the one near the middle that is blocked out) doesn't match the off pin for the drive. Also, I had to unplug the off pin holes in the connector to even get the connector to fit the pins on the kit board (that is; there is no "off" pin on the card that kit comes with :( ). It's a Toshiba 6GB laptop drive. I'm thinking of taking it to a shop here in town to see if they could tell me more.

Ok... I found this at the same site:
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=VE-007NHD http://www.compgeeks.com/images/300x300/hdd-ve-007nhd-unit.jpg

:D Thanks again FoBoT. I'd never heard of that site before. Hope this works.
