Between Pricewatch.com and Resellerratings.com, you should be able to find reputable dealers at a fair price. Personally I use Mwave.com, Spartantech.com (due to location), and Digirex.com for the most.

Here is my general list of items:
Case w/PSU
Motherboard
CPU w/HS & Fan
Memory
HD
CD/DVD - Optional
CDRW - Optional
Zip - Optional
Floppy
Video
Sound - Optional
Mouse
Keyboard
Speakers - Optional
Oh yes, you can almost always find a cheaper price on line that in a brick and mortar place.

brick and mortar?? so i am guessing that a motherboard with a say 1ghz chip (i think) would be fine. i found a list of stuff forsale, just its just the details were kind of out of my league of knowing at the moment. and when a computer says "designed for win 98" can that be done but designed for linux?

Usually you can get passed that "Made for Windows" thing, but you will probably run into some unsupported hardware. Hence it is easier to build you own and pick items you know are Linux compatible.

Unfortunately most hardware will not say if it is linux compatable. Fortunately, most hardware is linux compatable.
Where you have to look out is Modems, should be hardware (not winmodem). And Printers. Some printers use software to emulate some of their functionallity.
There are some good sites out there that will give you lists of hardware that work with linux. I have included one. A search on Google will probably reviel more and better ones. http://lhd.datapower.com/
