Yes! finally after about 6 months of playing with linux after six months of beating
a huge cloud of confusion away
with tuft's of hair and clenched fists and plenty of pepsi

...Only now am i ready

to give my self a whole new challenge

my goal to design a game to be that bad *** game programer

but the thing is i dont know a damn thing about code...yet

now i have the book
"The C Programming Language"
By Brian w. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie
Second Edition
it has a big blue C on the front ..stands out but not to flashy
and seemed more to the point but still totaly confusing :)

but a question poped up in my head.."would C be the best language to learn for my game???"

so to give u an idea it will be a high res 3d online game for linux systems
(maybe windows if its still around at release ) :)
content would be developed via 3ds max (win2k)
and maya maybe a dash of softimage
pov generated scenes are a possable factor aswell.

i want the game to be fast stable and smooth for users all up and down the ladder of connections 33.6 to t3

while useing as little system resources as possable while still maintianing smooth
"almost" life like 3d images in real time

so i suppose this all fall's under the game engine feild

and then that queston pops up in my head again
what language to learn...wish i had a babble fish....reading to much hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy..

we were gone use id's quake 3 engine but then we wouldnt be able to sell our game on the open market

so to make it short and sweet whats the best lingo to learn for developing a high res 3d game engine?

Short answer to that question, yes. Especially since you have the book. Long answer: Yes, C is an excellent, low(er) level language that can be used for all purposes. Whether for games, applications, or anything else for that matter (like... oh say an operating system) so to give u an idea it will be a high res 3d online game for linux systems
(maybe windows if its still around at release ) :)

Good book! Okay, that's a lot to accomplish for any language. Your three main choices would be C, C++, and Java. each with their pluses and minuses. My suggestion though would be to go with C, since you do have a primer book for it now anyways. we were gone use id's quake 3 engine but then we wouldnt be able to sell our game on the open market Open source it! Always a good idea, especially on linux so to make it short and sweet whats the best lingo to learn for developing a high res 3d game engine? To answer that question simply: Any real, major programming langauge. You have some high goals for your game. And there's abosolutely nothing wrong with that. I'd suggest using C, since it is an excellent language to use for any purpose, and you do already have a book for it. That and the fact that you have no programming experience anyways. Just don't expect to finish reading that book and be able to start right into your game. You're going to have a lot of reading to do and probably many other books to buy.
The trick is to also set some smaller goals for yourself along the way. Perhaps first a text game, then a small graphics game, like pac man or something. Work your way up. It's going to be a long journey for it but as long as you never lose sight of what you do want to eventually accomplish you can eventually do it. Be sure to keep everybody posted on your progress to. I think we'd all like to see a game like that for Linux. Best of luck!

I would love to see this come true!
I'd agree that C/C++ whould be the way to go, maybe some assembly for time critical routines, but i don't think anybody "does" assembly anymore, but it is fastest and more powerfull language there is, but there whould be portability issues...
Anyway, best of luck to you.
