During a meeting yesterday, the developers were told that one of the requirements for the future will be for each programmer to be a "Certified Java Programmer".

The company will pay for the exam, but only if we pass. Regardless of the merits (or lack of) for certification, I thought it was a little bit lame for the company to only reimburse us if we pass - even though it is required.

Honestly, I'm not really concerned with passing that test. I've gone over a handful of sample questions, and with a couple weeks prep-time I should be able to ace that test.

For some reason it's really bothering me that:

1) this is required (clearly we've all illustrated our technical ability by now)

2) Although mandated by management, we have to pay if we fail (unlikely, but the principle bothers me)

I realize that this will allow the marketing dept. to say to customers "all of our development team is SUN certified...", and may actually increase business (more $$$ for nanode).

Anyone else have experience with this situation?

If I become certified, does that mean your company will hire me? (^=

Well, I'm already certifiable, so...

Hey nanode, that's BS, in my experience. I'm a project manager, but I've dealt with this crap before. If a company mandates training or certification, then they should pay for it.

They are mandating a qualification post-hire that you are now burdened with obtaining. They should at least pay for the first test, straight up.

The fact that they don't pay for the test right out of the gate kind of shows a lack of faith in your skills, if you think about it.

My two cents...anyway, I'm sure you'll pass but it's the principle.

Thanks for the feedback. I now feel validated :)

I have (what I consider) a good job now. I'm not going to jeopardize it as a matter of protest, but I would like the higher-ups to realize they can get what the want, if they ask a little differently.

Skipping the fact of my employer not having a clue, they at least pay for some upcoming aix training. Although that is fairly lame to enforce a certification mid-stream with those circumstances.

Passing isn't the issue.. But what's next?
