so you probably know, if you've been following my perl posts, that i've been tinkering with log parsers, that get info that is later imported into excel files.

well i was nosing through the perl docs and stumbled onto the Win32::OLE module(s).

HOLY CRAP. i can COMPLETELY automate the process of generating the excel tables and charts by just prompting the user for a few bits of info that aren't already in the log, and then let perl fill in the appropriate cells in the excel file, and then open it so the user can verify the details and print out the charts they need.

dude this is SO COOL.

ok, i'm done now. i hope my boss lets me keep tinkering with this, since we've had not much else to do.

man, i should add some perl-related thing to my sig or something. not like i'm obsessed or anything.

....

i was nosing through old posts, i had THOUGHT i could blame TLD for getting me hooked on perl (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum14/HTML/001162.html) but it looks like it was originally jemfinch's fault (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum14/HTML/001159.html)

though TLD i think usually is around more to give out "qool" new ideas http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

<edit> so are like, a bunch of other people on here, but i was only lookin at real old posts. this forum just plain rocks and stuff.

i may just stick with perl for a while... i have a BAD habit of wanting to try EVERYTHING at once. though i'm starting to think about focusing on web stuff, so we'll see.

i got nothin but time, so no worries.

I'm not sure what that means, but you understand, don't you?

So, how does this whole OLE thing to excel spreadsheets and such work?

I thought it sounded interesting...

there is nothing inherently wrong about advocating your favorite language, as long as you are polite about it.

well, at least sorta polite. nothing wrong with a little fun http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
