ostrstream class

I'm having some difficulty using the ostrstream class. I'm using it with the automatically allocated data buffer rather than one I've set up. I have no problem using it the first time, but when I want to clear the buffer, I can't do it reliably. Does anyone know the proper methodology for emptying the buffer, then preparing it for refilling? TIA
