Does anyone know of a good, free Java profiler, preferrably console-based?
At the moment, I'm using "java -Xrunhprof", but it's not ideal. Is there anything better?
Also, I don't have much experience using both profilers and debuggers. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions they'd like to share?

It's for performance optimization. You run your app, and the profiler tells you how much CPU time is spent in certain methods, how much memory is used by which objects, etc. At least, that's what I think it does...

Yes, but I cannot remember the name of it. I'm going to be talking to my ex-boss tomorrow and I'll ask him what we were using.
It seems to me that Javasoft had something for free, and there was another one that had a 30 day free usage and then turned itself off.
I'll remember to ask him and I'll post it tomorrow.

DOH! I talked to him for an hour and a half last night and I totally forgot to ask what the profiler was. I'll find out for you.

We used OptimizeIt and JProbe.
JProbe is at http://www.sitraka.com/software/jprobe/
and OptimizeIt is at http://www.optimizeit.com/
javap is a class file deconstructor, not a profiler. I couldn't find a free profiler though.

Cool, thanks. I actually met one of the coders @ KL Group (the old name of the company who make JProbe), at a party after the Ottawa Linux Symposium (BTW, OLS was *amazing*. I definately recommend that anyone who can attend should do so).
Too bad there aren't any Free ones...
