I've seen those db 9 and db 25 serial adapters with a rj45 jack. My question is will this work with a standard cat 5 cable if both the terminal and terminal server had the adapters mentioned. I didn't have any luck trying but thought an adapter could be bad or have the wrong pinout. I had no luck finding anything on the 'net about this either. If anyone has a reference or answer please let me know.

A standard Cat 5 cable will not work. You need a Crossover cable to make a direct Peer-to-peer connection.

Don't know if its the same but I use this type of cabling on Cisco routers. The call these cables rollover cables. Basically as I see it pin 1 at one end of the cable goes to pin 8 on the other end and vice-versa.

Have a look at www.digi.com, (http://www.digi.com,) they have been doing that for years with their multi-port cards, search on cabling
