I'm having probs with a default install of Red Hat 7.0. It's networked to a LAN with a static IP. It will reply to pings but wont ping out. I can telnet out and reslove domain names also. I can't surf the net or collect mail. ipchains is set to accept all and I have put in the IP of the default router. I'm at a loss.

Don't know if I can be of much help on this one but...

You mentioned ipchains is set for input - what about output (is it set to accept or deny)? What is forward set to? Can you ping the loopback adapter? Check your ip configuration with ifconfig. Also check your route with the route command.

Thanx for the reply... output and forward are both on ACCEPT... route is all ok. I can ping both lo and the machines IP (eth0) (which I should have mentioned before). It seems that the packets are being lost in the ether somewhere. I'm trying to reconfigure the kernel to turn all routing and firewalling off. That too seems to be a problem. Stay tuned for more bumbling of a newbie hacker

Just curious now -- what was icmp set to in the firewall? In particular - what was the icmp 0-9 range set to?

I hate when packets get lost in the ether! :p

Not sure off the top of my head.

Will try and get back to you on that one, recompling takes forever on a 486. :)
