I'm trying to set up file sharing between my two PC's with no luck. I have Win2000 on one and RedHat 7.1 on the other. I've got a crossover cable and am using two Kingston KNE100TX ethernet cards. I have experience with windows networking but am also a Linux newbie. Do I need to use Samba? Can any one point me in the right direction?

Samba would be the easiest way to go. FTP is also an option. I would install Samba and also Swat for easy configuration.

Check out Linux Magazine's site. www.linuxmag.com (http://www.linuxmag.com) i think.
They have two articles introducing SAMBA that were very useful to me, as well as RedHat Bible which i am constantly opening, but i beginning to open it less often! =)

Go with Samba, I just did this myself in literally the same configuration (other box is Win98 client, and am passing through an unmanaged hub).

Samba is easy to acquire from RedHat, and installation is pretty simple. As a point of reference, I used "RedHat Unleashed" from Sams Publishing as my guide (how's that for a measure on my level of newbie-ness?)

Config is easy to follow, and the options are unbelievable. I've got my network printer running on the Linux box. After Samba configuration and rebooting the Win98 client, I was able to install and register my *new* printer on the Win98 client machine. And, I was able to browse the folders on my Linux drive as I dictated in the Samba configuration files.

Lickety-split. :D
