NIS setup problems

I'm am a complete newbie to Linux. An I'm trying to setup a small Linux network to experiment with. Anyway, I'm trying to setup NIS. I tried to follow all directions I've seen. I have not made any changes to any configuration files and yet I cannot get NIS to work. When I type ypinit, I receive MANY errors. Some including: failed to send 'clear' to local ypserv: RPC: Unknown hostUpdating rpc byname... as well as a whole lot more. Any ideas??? Why can't anything work for me on the first try. I did a default install, nothing custom.

Please help.
