I recently added a new Linux (RH 7) machine to my network. I configured everything as usual, but Samba is playing tricks on me. For some reason I can see it from Win 95/98 machines but I can't access it. The machine used dhcp fine from my server. When I try to ping from this machine to any other machine on the network it can't see it. Hey, but it can ping itself. That's a plus+ . Has anyone ever had this problem or am I alone on this one? I know the network card is fine because I tested it in other machines. I am using Linksys LNE100TX and Tulip driver. I also have a light between the card and the hub. I have checked all the obvious stuff and it looks good. HELP!!!

Are you trying to ping the IP address or the hostname of the computer. If you are trying to ping the hostname, the other computers have no way of resolving the IP address if your linux box is using DHCP. Did you setup samba to use a wins server that is on your network, or is it trying to be the wins server.

Of course, I may be wrong, but I'm just trying to help.

That's what I am here for is help. Anything you have to offer I will listen. To answer your questions...I am trying to ping the IP address. I was successful in doing this, but I can't ping that Linux machine from any other machines on the network. I do not have a WINS server resident. Everything feeds off of my Linux Gateway (older Hurricane machine). I'm sorry that I am not making much sense. This problem has got me confused, I am not sure where to go next.
