Hi,
I am having trouble getting my @Home cable to work with Linux. I have read many posts and HOWTO's trying to get it to work. I am a COMPLETE newbie to Linux. I have been working with computers (well windoze at least)and networking so I understand the concepts, but not the structure of Linux. Can someone please help me with this as I would like to continue learning Linux. My email is ravx25@yahoo.com.
Please no RTFM posts. I see many posts from Linux users saying if you don't know how to do it...go away! I personally don't see this as advancement of Linux so any help would be highly appreciated.

You won't get many responses unless you tell us what distro you are using. Most use different configuration utilities and startup files for configuring cablemodems and such.
So read the manual you got with your distro and tell us what it is. ;)

The reason being is your particular question has been asked hundreds of times just on this site. We also have NHF's to help setup ethernet cards and internet access.
Most distros have online documentation that explains how to setup @home with their particular distro.
We don't tell users to go away, but it does get frustrating answering the same questions over and over again. Some of our members have given up and don't bother to reply to these anymore. Especially the ones that do not provide enough details.
Is your ethernet card up and running? What have you tried so far? dhcp or static?

OK,
I admit in my original post I did neglect to mention a few :D details.....here goes one more time.
I am running Red Hat 7.1 with kernel 2.4.0 My ethernet card shows to be installed via dmesg | grep eth. I have printed the @Home NHF that dollaz submitted. I followed the directions in adding everything and checked in net-config just to make sure. I also read up on other posts saying that I should apply all the information for the network statically so I did this as well adding DNS, gateway, hostname, domain and the IP address given under windows.
I can perform a loopback so I know the card is working but thats as far as I can get. Hopefully, this can provide enough information to help out. Thank you for not flaming me mdwatts.

Running 'ifconfig' shows that eth0 is up and running?
You've setup a static ip address, configured the dns servers, gateway and others, and it still doesn't work?
What exactly is not working? Pinging, Network unreachable?
Lucky me with Caldera either installing with dhcp or static, it always works after the initial install.
Not being familiar with Redhat, I'll try to have a look at their site to see what network configuration tools they have. Is netconfig one of them?

I did a search for cablemodem at Redhat and got http://www.redhat.com/support/alex/23.html
Give the documentation a try and if you get stuck, let us know.

Well,
I finally got it up :o)
The one thing that worked that I didn't try was resetting the cable modem. I had to put everything in statically because I couldn't get an IP address from DHCP but that's ok with me cause it's up. Thank you for the links becuase ultimately it was one of the suggestions in them that worked. :)

Good news.
I'll have to remember that about resetting the cablemodem as some here say 'it still doesn't work'. Perhaps that is just what is needed.
