mail server

i'm planning to have a local mail server.
i'm using slackware 8.0 and an ip of 192.168.0.254 as the mail server.
what will i need?
could someone give me steps on what to do.

One choice would be Sendmail (http://www.sendmail.org).

qmail is a easier to administer solution...
