I'm running Mandrake 7.1 and i just got shaw@home cable modem. can someone please tell me (step by step) how to get this thing up and running. i know my ip address, subnet, gateway etc... but i don't know the step by step procedure. they gave me a "terapro" modem and a "smc" nic card. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

check the boot sequence in /var/log/messages for your nic, you should see something like:

cc290967-a kernel: pcnet32.c: PCI bios is present, checking for devices...
cc290967-a kernel: Found PCnet/PCI at 0x1440, irq 5.
cc290967-a kernel: eth0: PCnet/Home 79C978 at 0x1440, 00 90 00 06 16 f3 assigned IRQ 5.
cc290967-a kernel: pcnet32.c:v1.25kf 26.9.1999 tsbogend@alpha.franken.de

then try linuxconf

got to go the wife is calling.........
be back later

I have @home and the only way that I could get it to work was not to use DHCP, but to go in and manually put in my IP, mask, DNS... This was the case for Redhat and also Mandrake.
Whats weird my friend down the street, who uses @home but was under a different range of IP address was able to use DHCP. I never did figure that one out. :

think that's wierd I had @crap and it worked fine untill I switched modems and IP's then I couldn't get it to work either dhcp or static. I do not know to this day what they did to that new network to keep linux off of it but it was very effective. I know quite well how networks work and tried everything I or anyone else I knew could think of and no go. I really wish I could talk to their design engineers to see what it is they did.

I seen them use/do some funky stuff....
Like a netmask of 255.255.254.0, that makes over 500 users on a subnet, all using the same gateway. That is why in peak time the network slows down, with over 500 users on the subnet, all using the same gateway, everyone is going to fight for the available bandwith. I think that it is just a cost cutting measure.

I say this because the netmask was 255.255.255.0, but as more and more joined,
the layout that was planned couldn't handle all the the users in a given area. They underestmated the number of users that would use the service. Faced with 2 choices, put in a another router and more fiber, or double the number of user in a subnet. What do you think they did?
