I'm using mandrake7.2 with D-link network card, adsl external modem,128ram ,p3 533. I set up the network card during installation (only select dhcp), and it can connected to internet after reboot. Yeah! my modem is working in linux , but my system needed 40sec to start the graphical login mode from console mode. it took over 40sec to launch netscape , gnomeicu ,Gmc and some other programs , but most programs was fine. and everything is working fine if I disable network at boot (config in drakconf-startup service).
I tried to disable dhcp and enable manual mode, but it didn't work even I gave ip,dns and gateway. I want to know WHY? whats wrong?

If your ISP is connecting users via DHCP then it will be very hard to use manual (static) settings to get on the internet.. I don't know why it's taking so long - can you be a little more specific? Does it hang at a certain spot?

1) yes,my ISP is connecting users via dhcp, but I can use manual setting in win2000.
2) the installation was straight forward.
Thanks,
