Well here goes there are serveral routing and firewall issues here. I installed rh 6.2 again the other day http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif but this time i wanted to use it to route me to the internet so i connected the modem and started getting stuck in.

Originally i just set up the network

FTP
TELNET

this is all i wanted then i went about setting up my internet connection and then started messing about with ipchains and packet forwarding this is where it went pair shaped http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif.

Firstly FTP stopped working it gets 423 error :/

Telnet only works when the linux box is already connected to the internet (I presume this is my dodgey routing)

also i have trouble starting my computer because of sendmail http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif any help on any of these matters would really help!

Hehe almost forgot how do i set my connection when it works properly to allow me to play quake and use icq etc and even ftp :/

in your /etc/hosts file put your computer name, if its hanging during boot its probably becuase its trying to reslove your hostname
