Networking Question

ok here is my damned question....
with windows to windows and netBEUI protocal
i can do the full extent of the network localy of 10MB
and still use the CableModem access threw the hub like normal.....

NOW why cant i do this with Linux also?
even trying to use a ip aliasing for eth0
and it still doesn't work what can i be doing wrong?
