microsoft has network neighborhood, net view, and options to map a network drive.

With Linux how would I , for example, copy a file to another computer on my lan, so that it's easy for end users.

and what command can I use simply to see a list of the other computers on the lan.

Are the other computers windows boxes? If they are I would say Samba, there are tons of help files and walkthroughs on the net. There are even some at this site...NHF's

Samba will let windows clients see the linux box in network neighborhood, and share files accordingly.

all boxes are linux, I just need to move files around, view client disks, withough opening a protocol like ssh rlogin ftp...
I need something more transparent for the end users.

I understand what you are saying, but this statement is just wrong. You NEED protocols, but you just don't want them to have to KNOW the protocols.

If you want the thing that is most like Network Neighborhood and that provides all the functionality that you need, just use Samba
