Suppose I have the following things:

1) A windows machine with high-speed internet access and a second network card

2) A linux machine with a network card

3) A network cable

How do I set things up so that the linux machine can get internet access from the windows machine? I have the windows network card installed, but the linux network card is only physically inserted. I still need to set up /dev/eth0. I'm hoping for something foolproof and simpleton-ready http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks!

First of all reverse that senario. I'm getting ready to do the same thing pretty quick and will use the Linux machine as a gateway. Much more secure, Windows leaks like a seive.

A pretty good tutorial is located on the Mandrake site.

Internet connection sharing (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Networking/IPmasq/pages/)

Yeah, but the high-speed net device that I have (wireless) works only with windows. I have no choice but to use windows as the gateway.

what winders do you have? 98SE and w2k include internet connection sharing, which works pretty good and is only slightly difficult to setup

if you don't have either of these then you will need one of the third party programs, check www.download.com (http://www.download.com) , i think analogX is one

Read the NFH on Networking with Analog X.
That will work if you don't want to switch the roles of your machines (the preferred way).

And put a firewall on that Windows gateway. You can download a free one from the Web at www.tucows.com. (http://www.tucows.com.) http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

Or go to http://www.zonealarm.com/ for a highly recommended freeware firewall.
