It always says you have mail when you first log in as root. Its just a default message. Someone else who is less lazy can tell you about it. If you want to check it and have Pine installed, just type Pine...

Actually, you'd type pine, but I just use mail for local mail that goes to root.

Yes, mail will work from the commandline. Perhaps 'man mail' will give you additional info.

hey thanks for the help. it threw me off to see a message about e-mail when i never set anything up. I DID end up typing mail on the command line to get the message but my power went out last night and i couldnt get back on to reply so i just went to sleep.

for this e-mail do i need a command line email program or can i use something like kmail so i can have my pop3 email too?

'mail' will work from the commandline. Had a little experience with it while working on a project on AIX.

You can use a GUI email client while logged on as root and receive the same mail (I think). Using the commandline for anything is good experience especially when you are having X problems and need to troubleshoot using the console (commandline).

Even when using X, you will find yourself using a xterm to do a lot of your work. Not like Windows where most do not use the dos prompt at all.

Actually you can set it up so that any messages that would normally go to root would be redirected to you as a normal user....

That is how mine is set up... Then I don't have to log in as root just to check and make sure that everything is ok...

By the way, I use mutt for my email...
