Hey I'm trying to help my gf get on the net at her house. She has one jack coming into her room that needs to be split between 2 people. I lent her a hub so her and her roommate. I was thinking if they connected the in jack to the hub then they could just plug into the hub and setup up their network configs and go. But this doesn't seem to be working. Do I need a router or what? Little help please.

try plugging the wall into the uplink port on the hub, then the pc's into the regular ports

Thats what i told them to do, so provided they actually did that then it didn't work.
SO any other possible suggestions.
Thankx Fo

Check to see if the hub has a button that needs to be pressed to make the uplink port work as such. What OS are they running?

We are assuming that the port is live.
Has this been verified?
How is IP handled? DHCP or STATIC?
What is at the other end of the port?
Hub? Switch? Intelligent Switch? Router Switch combo?
Need more info. Otherwise I would be guessing.

Static ips
I'm not sure about the whole house setup.
It's in her soroity house so my gf and her roommate have one jack coming into their room. So I'll assume that they share ethernet. I'll assume they have SOME sort of router for the connection into the house and its split into the different rooms.
I really have no idea whatto do to make it work. grrr

Plug it directly into one of the PC's and configure it with the static IP. If this works, then a hub with a working uplink port is all that is needed. If not, find out why: check the patch cable between patch panel and hub/swith, if neccassary. Change the cables if need be. The 110 jack in the wall might be bad. If you have a managed switch on the other end, the port may not be setup. Look for signs of sloppiness, as many campus networks are setup by sloppy, have hung over CS majors :)
