Linux/Samba username Formats

I am having a problem with RedHat 7.0 and Samba 2.07 recognizing different username formats. RH seems to accept for ex.
User: user.name or
User: user_name however Samba does not seem to like either format. I have anouther RH 6.2 system that
User: user.name works fine on.

Any Ideas?

Since I'm not a Samba user, have you read all the documentation included with Samba 2.07. With a newer version, perhaps there have been some changes. The Samba website might also help.

I'm confused, are you breaking down a user name into 2 parts? User names are usually something like:
joe
teresa
Anyway, the username is just one word, not in parts.
