Is there any way to set up my system so that it will automatically log into an account on my system?

The reason for this is that I will have a network with the server in the basement. There will be a switch in the house that will turn this server on. Once it gets goin, I don't wanna hafta walk down into the basement to log on.

I guess then another question arises. Do I even need to logon to an account for stuff like IP masquerading and what-not to start or does that all start before the logon prompt?

There is no need to log on for the things you mentioned. In fact you could remove your monitor, keyboard, and mouse if you need them for another computer. If you need to get into that computer just use telnet or ssh.
