I have a desktop (running mandrake 8.1) and a laptop running (debian potato). My ISP uses a dhcp server. I was wondering if I can use just a hub to connect both computers to the internet. Or would I have to get a router or switch?

Thanks,

You could use a hub but set the desktop as a router/firewall with ipmasquerading, then the internet will be aviable on both machines :)

You could just use a hub, but only if your ISP gives you multiple IP addresses. If they only give you one, then you have to share that connection. You can either buy a broadband router, or configure one of the computers to act as 'server' and share the connection as Ferrol suggested. I've never used Debian, but Mandrake has lots of GUI tools that make it easier to configure the connection.

Try this URL it may be a bit out dated but has the basics of what you want.
