PPTP support in Kernel 2.4?

Hi there I have just setup the routing/sharing of my cablemodem in Mandrake 7.2 Unfortunately, I connect to work through a PPTP connection. This ran fine through Winroute NAT but it appears that the situation is more difficult in Linux. Should I read all the docs and patch the kernel of my system or move up to kernel 2.4? I suspect that it may have the appropriate patches already. How difficult/risky is changing the kernel to 2.4?
