can i set up a router AND a firewall on the same machine have it work right and/or work at all?
i plan on having a windows machine and another linux machine working as a webserver, 3 systems total.
i have cable modem access and a hub. i am assuming the firewall/router will come from the cable modem to one nic, and the other nic will go to the hub, and the other 2 machines will go to the hub. is this feasible?

i would also like a mailserver running on the webserver machine.

yes, if you want a simple pre-setup system like that, then check out www.e-smith.org (http://www.e-smith.org)

if you want to build it from scratch, then pick a distro and go for it! :)

not only is it feasible, its how most firewalls work.

astaro (www.astaro.com) has a pretty mature linux based firewall solution (which also acts as a router). But my advice to you is to build your own, thereby learning all the tricks and caveats of firewalls.....

cool. that's good to hear.
i'll get started...and i'm sure i'll be asking a lot more questions during the process. =)

I run a firewall, router, apache, sendmail, ssh, telnet, ftp (and most other little bits and bats) on my home Linux box, so yes, perfectly feasible.

Be sure to ask away :) it's not too hard..
