I have adsl on a dual boot computer (win2k/redhat linux); the internet connection with win2k is fine but I still have trouble with the linux side.

I understand that it is more or less a hack to get the internet connection to work with linux. Can somebody help me with some suggestions to narrow all the possibilities down a little bit? thanks.

The adsl is from verizon and the modem is connected to one of the two NICs (3com). The two cards have been detected by linux as working. The protocole is not pppoE but I don't now what it is, may be just direct connection.

Well, you need to know what type of connection you're using, as every type requires different settings. In NYC, Verizon uses PPPoE for their DSL connections. Did you have to install a program called WinPoet in Windows? that's the PPPoE software.

If your connection does use PPPoE, you need to install the Linux PPPoE client (http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/).

I've seen another connection type that people refer to as PPPoA, don't know if there's connection software for that under Linux.

The other types of connection ISP's use are static IP (pretty rare and expensive at this point), and DHCP. Either of these don't require extra software, and you'd need to get the exact network settings from Verizon that you need to use.
