I'm still a newbie to linux. I'm basically trying to learn how to get my box online and running. I'm running FreeBSD 4.3 on an old 486. I'm going to install Apache with php and mysql and use webmin to control everything. I'm using cable and I know I'm not supposed to host my own server but I would just like to quickly put it up, see that it works, and take it back down, for my own enjoyment and learning experience. I have a router and have 3 machines hooked up to it. It uses DHCP so that it gives each machine an ip within the network. My main question is, if you were to rent a dedicated server, you have a name for the machine like name.server.com. I know that server.com is your domain. How do you set that up? Is that just what you use as your hostname? Do you need a dedicated IP for this? I'm just wondering if there is anyway to set all of this up on a maching that doesn't have a dedicated ip. I have already read through all the name based hosting and stuff, but since I don't have a dedicated IP, what would I use for nameservers in my domain control panel? Thanks for your help!
