Craig McPherson 09-19-2001, 06:22 PM Simple Network Management Protocol. It's used for getting information from and sending instructions/configuration to certain network devices -- programmable switches, some smart hubs, some bridges, network traffic monitors, some printserver appliances, etc. Most switches and things like that are "smart" now and self-configure rather than having SNMP support. I personally haven't actually encountered any SNMP devices IRL. Although the protocol is still in use with some network devices, it seems to be waning in popularity. justlinux.com
