Samba newbie

I installed Mandrake 8.0 and want to setup my little home network, I downloaded "samba-latest.tar.gz" from Samba and extracted it but it extracted into my home dir and not where the the NHF's said it would. I know it's something I did but I'm to new to Linux to figure it out. My wuestion is: How do I get the "samba-latest.tar.gz" to extract into the right dir and after that is done, do I still need to install it? I know it sounds dumb but hey we all weren't experts when we started...........Thanks in advance!!

euhm why don't you just install the rpm file from your distro cd?

rpm --install samba*.rpm
