anyone help me with this task.. I'm new to Linux and wondered how this can be achieved using what? software? our Firewall uses a SOCKS proxy gateway. I use Hummingbird in Win2K.. whats required for Mandrake8 ? and the steps.. hope thats not too much to ask!

As far as I know, each application you use has to be individually configured to use the SOCKS proxy. Many web browsers and network applications have SOCKS support. Some IRC clients have SOCKS support, some ICQ clients do, etc. Your selection may just be a bit limited.
A proxy is any ugly hack anyway. Why not try to talk your network goons into running a gateway instead of a proxy?

Unavoidable I'm afraid Craig..
I've installed the latest Mozilla version (.9?) for Linux and its this for now I want SOCKSified or Netscape. Both certainly have SOCKS config entries but what invokes the SOCKS layer for each app?

With Netscape, have you gone Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies -> Manual -> View and then added the hostname or IP of your SOCKS server to the "SOCKS host" entry? Does that not work for you? Mozilla is probably similar, but I don't have a copy handy to check.

Found this http://tsocks.sourceforge.net/ TSOCKS code... but having difficulty installing it. Damn hard starting all new stuff again.. BUT FUN :D
Yeah I can specify the socks server in the config of eithr Mozilla or Netscape but it they just sit there when a link is activated. So I assume they expect to have addtional code to allow the connection to occur..hey I'm stabbing in the dark here ;)
if i could install this 'tsocks' I'd be happy. I cannot run MAKE or MAKEFILE within the unpacked directory as it returns 'bash: make or makefile: command not found' what does this really mean??? signed on as ROOT.
Doh
