I don't know how to make my linux machine a router

I'm very new in the Linux-scene and I want to configure my linuxmachine as a router. I allready have configurded the network stuff, but I just don't know how to make it a router...
I hope you can help me..

are you trying to make your box a router and a pc (are you going to use it for other stuff)?

or just a standalone router (and gateway?) ?

well, I actually use the machine as a file server for our private LAN... and we decided to use it as router, too. Just to save money, as we are online almost all the time...
