hey guys.. a few nights ago I couldn't sleep, so I decided to start writing a home networking HOWTO in redhat (i'll soon be doing one for Mandrake and Slackware, but I need to work out the small things here first).
I'm asking you to please check it out, and email me:
1. comments,
2. suggestions on how to make it easier to understand,
3. concepts I might use that you don't understand or think people might not understand,
4. readability.
my email currently is:
fandelem@hotmail.com
the webpage currently is:
http://www.fandelem.com/nhf.html
Thanks guys.. I look forward to hearing from a lot of you!
(also, if the person who is in charge of NHF's wants to email me, I would love to try to set this up for a NHF once I get all the kinks worked out (that's what it was designed for at first..))
regards,
~kyle
note: at this stage, I *will* credit you for anything you provide me with, so please send me those emails http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

fan, i really like the firewall you choose, but theres a bug in it and i think you should included it in your nhf (i sent it to the author also).
bug
if you half pppoe dsl (i've only tested with rp-pppoe, so i don't know what else causes probs)
then you need to change a line in your pnfirewall.conf
change the OUTERIF=eth0 to OUTERIF=ppp0
it works perfectly for me with that change.
edit:
man i needed sleep, well the point i was making is that the default is eth0, and dsl using an eth card, but you must type in ppp0 for it to work. I wonder why i thought that was a bug.

Napster changes are in!
These new settings should make napster work tons more (often):
http://www.fandelem.com/nhf.html
then go to pmfirewall section (step four).. and at the bottom of the page.. there are instructions (option #2)..
give me feedback!

Sorry this is totally off-topic, but I was reading the NHF that you put together and noticed the prices on the nics and hubs. Have you bought from these places, and the hardware is good, and the company reliable? Becuase those are much better prices then I've seen elsewhere. I'm looking to get my home computers networked, and I was thinking I'd have to spend a lot more money then that, which is basically the only reason I havn't done it yet.
11000,
The is pretty much the low end of the spectrum I have seen on Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com), but the killer is going to be shipping charges which will put the card close to $20. After making a note of total charges, I checked Best Buy and found the cost was about the same. They recently had a Home networking kit for about $80 that included 2 PCI 10/100 nics, 10/100 hub and and cables. I would suggest D-link over Linksys, for the well known problems surrounding Linksys cards. (Though on a side note, 2.2.17 & 2.4 kernels do not seem to have a problem with them).

I think Shad does have a point- shipping charges can get you.. especially if the companies "tack on" the "handling" part (my friend has paid 17 bucks for shipping and "handling" on a 2 lb package (it was for 3 NICs I believe))..
I just wanted to show you what you *could* use to build your home network-- and what will *work* in linux, windows, etc.. that combination is a tried and working model..
has anyone else tried that napster info I posted? i haven't received any complaints from my brother so far so i hope it's working ;b

~kyle

Thanks for the info. I wasn't thinking about the shipping adding up that much. I'm not sure if I have a place in town where I can get nics and hubs cheaply though. I do think I've seen the D-link home networking kit somewhere though, I'll have to check around and see if I can find it for a good price.
