Well, for all everyone says about how Slack is difficult to install, it's only taken me a couple of hours, and now I'm sitting in KDE (compiling Fluxbox) and posting to LNO from Galeon. Can't say fairer than that ;)

:D Sweet!! I agree about installing Slack. It's really easy when compared to some other distro's. Let me know how you get on and if you like it.

Hey -- I'm just making the boot and root disks for my install of Slack 8 right now!

I tried out Slack 7.1 on an old comp and was won over, so now that I'm installing a larger HD on my main box, I'm taking the plunge and moving over to Slack.

About the install process: I first thought the process was a little different, but after actually reading through the documentation, it was no big deal. In fact, it was the flexibility of the install process that let me get things running really nicely on an old Pentium (75Mhz, 32MB RAM) right out of the box.

Good luck with your Slack!

I agree - the hype about Slack being hard to install is BS. I never touched Linux before until last Friday. I am a complete Mac person - don't do Windows. I had a pc I pulled out of someones dumpster laying around and a little time so I grabbed to iso Slack 8.0 and had it up and running in under 2 hrs - I was impressed!!! The best part is all the new Unix stuff I have been cramming my head with learning OS X for the last year is pretty much all compatible with Linux. After getting it going - I felt right at home. Never did get X_windows working - but haven't spent much time really - the pc is 100MHz / 24mb RAM so we are already pushing it. I really just wanted a headless server to control several processes I have been running on several different Mac's throughout the LAN in my house. The Linux box has fit right in beautifully and best part is - now I have NO WINDOWS in my house!

Thx for all those who helped on the bbs with the numerous ??? this newbie has been tossing out.

I'll add my agreement to this post. Slack is way easy to install and setup (not to mention quick!). Plus it doesn't default to installing ****loads of stuff I don't want. When I installed Redhat I spent more time uninstalling software than I did installing. "Wait, whaddya mean you don't want kPacman? Are you INSANE???" <-- Redhat's installer dissing me.

:D Absolutely! Slackware is the best! I started with Slack 7.0 on a pc I built, installed Caldera on a second PC (hated it), replaced Caldera with FreeBSD (BEAUTIFUL X-Windows, but confusing command line, now that I've learned Linux) and then replaced FreeBSD with Slack 8.0. I've since upgraded my Slack 7.0 to 8.0. In all cases, Slack installed in an hour to an hour and a half, with very few problems. I'm running Apache, Bind, SSH and ftp on my primary Slack box, and it's been a champ. If I could get a good replacement for MS-Office (I wasn't real impressed with Star Office) and certification prep software (I need an MCP for a promotion at work) for Linux, I'd scrap my Windows 2K and go pure Slack.
