I've been thinking: "Linux is cool. I want people to know Linux is cool. What can I do to show them how cool linux is?"
So, the question I pose to you is: what is something I can do in linux to amaze my friends?
keep in mind, that they are not quite as geek-minded as i am, so showing them something cool like running some sort of server or cool text or scripting tricks probably won't work.
also note: they got a kick out of bb (the demo of aalib)

Use a script to make Xsetbg or sometihing update your background with new l33t pr0n every 30 seconds ;)

Dude, I can't tell you how many people I've switched to Linux when they see my mad pr0n capabilities. Not only can I be downloading at all times (without constant reboots), but they're always impressed by my porn-get script :).

Text-mode Quake.
It's the normal Quake 1 source, linked against aavga rather than svgalib. The aavga libraries use aalib to display SVGA graphics in text mode.
It works best if your console has bold capability (it should), and is high-resolution.
I wish I could remember where I saw it, but I'm pretty sure it was on this board. Check the Linux Games forum, back a few months.

Using Mandrake 8.2 & Redhat 7.2
The Windows users I know all get excited by superfical stuff - ie., multiple desktops, multiple desktop wallpapers that change every 10 minutes, the tons of cool games that come standard, changing window managers with just a couple of clicks, and just showing them the KDE menu (they freak out when they see all of the apps & utilities).
And then I floor them when I tell them it's all free!:D
