If you have Roaring Penguin PPPoE installed (www.roaringpenguin.com), it's easy to get your DSL to automatically connect upon boot. Thus, you'll no longer be dependant upon your distro's GUI login tool.
1) Login as root.
2) Open /etc/rc.d/rc.local
3) Add the following line to the end of the file:
/usr/sbin/adsl-start.
You'll never need to manually open your DSL connection again :)
