I've seen a couple of LNOers talking about QNX. It's a *nix, right?

I'm completly green on it. Where could I get it? How does it differ from other OSes?

I think QNX is a RTOS (real-time OS, or so they say), and it's intended to be used on small devices such as handheld computers.

It can be used as a desktop OS but it's not really recommended, as I don't believe that there's a whole lot of software available for it.

Just give me an OS with Mozilla, OpenOffice.org, X-Chat, the GIMP, and vim, and I'll be quite happy (hey, the end user doesn't really need much more than that to do most things).

Holly Cow!! QNX has come along way since I last used it a year ago. I haven't D/L it yet but the ISO grew from about 100MB to 200MB and you can also get Mozilla (http://www.qnx.com/developer/download/free/), another ISO withcontributed software (http://www.qnx.com/developer/download/contrib/), and some decent games. (http://www.qnx.com/developer/download/contrib/violent_games.html)

I'll be checking this out soon!! ;)

Yeah... I heard somebody, I forgot who, was talking about how much they liked using QNX. When I checked out the homepage for it, they seemed to lean towards usage on small devices, but they did mention it was useful on desktops as well.

Next time I get near a high bandwidth connection, I think I may download it...

man, QNX sucks big time as a desktop OS.

there is almost no software available for Office, text, or graphics editing, Mozilla 1.0 can't render images correctly, programs crash left and right...and you have to install the X Window System and the GTK/QT toolkits to get any decent apps.

at least it doesn't suck as much as BeOS. Mozilla brought that OS to its knees.

i dl'ed QNX RTP, and besides the lack of software, it was ok.

one thing i have against most *nixes is that the utilities aren't quite as nice as the GNU equivalents, so it's mostly linux for me

Why is that? I would think that maybe the programmers of the other non-GNU *nixes could take a few cues form their GNU counterparts...

It always messes me up when I try to use GNU style '--option' commands on say, a Solaris box... :o
