I aquired an ultrasparc 5 and connected the montior up to it. I then powered up and I got the boot log to show on the monitor. Then one day the video does not show. The system works but how can I see if my on board video is shot or something is else. I know default for video on the sun system is some bizarre setting and I wonder if somehow my system changed to the default. If that is the case then my monitor does not support that screen setting. Someone please help.

Do you have a Sun Monitor?

If so hit the second button to your left...It has a symbol on it that looks like |[]| (kinda)..the little light next to it should be on 1. 2 is for another video input. This button can be accidentally hit while moving the monitor.

Unfortunately no, I don't have a Sun monitor. I was given this workstation by someone. This really has me bummed out.

There are some pretty knowledgable people at #sparc on irc.openprojects.net that could probably help you out.

Do a man on m64config it will explain how to configure the video on your machine.
smoething like:
m64config -dev /dev/fbs/0 -res 1024x786
it's been a while so i don't remember exactly

If you left the machine on after it booted up and it sat there awhile then it might have just blanked the screen. Make sure the plug in connected securely then try tapping a benign key such as "shift" and if that was the problem it should reactivate the screen output.

No. The monitor does not even power up in the usual way. I want to try maybe setting up a terminal with a null modem cable when I can get hold of a null modem cable to connect to the serial port. I think I am just gonna sell it on ebay. Know a good starting price to sell this piece of hardware?

There are still a lot of options to get an ultra 5 working in this manner:

1)assuming the frame buffer is working fine, you and the monitor is trashed, you can get a cheapo SUN (13w3) to VGA adapter on Ebay for a few $$$.

2)replacement framebuffers aren't too expensive unless you need an elite 3D etc.

3)serial terminal - an ultra 5 can be a nice server. I've got some old school sparcstations with no video at all that just sit on the shelf running mysql - more reliable than the x86 PCs
