I am currently on a Sun Ultra 5 at school which is running solaris 8. I compiled fluxbox and installed it to /home/dfrey/local/bin/fluxbox

I want to run fluxbox instead of CDE. How can I do this? I have changed my .xsession and .xinitrc, but that didn't seem to help.

Any ideas?

In the Solaris xdm screen (where you log in) you should have a choice between OpenWindows CDE and failsafe (maybe Gnome and KDE too) under the options button...pick failsafe and it will log you into a plain X session, type the path to fluxbox:

(fluxpath)/fluxbox &

And that should get it up.

There is some way to edit the xdm chooser screen too, but I never have done that.

Any ideas?
