I installed FreeBSD 4.5 and for some weird reason I get this string of error messages every 30 seconds that claims that /dev/console is not a login device (or something like that..I am booted into w98 now) and that getty is too fast. It then rests for 30 seconds and starts up again.

In all of my *nix days I have never had to deal with tty or getty problems, so I am clueless as to where to look and what to edit.

All the messages stop in single user mode.

I'm not familiar with the errors you describe, but I usually operate in single user mode. Are you acquainted with www.freebsdforums.org (http://www.freebsdforums.org) ? Maybe someone there could help you.

I've seen that before. It's when you can't log in to the first console (tty) when FreeBSD loads. It happens when you disable ttys in /etc/ttys. Were you messing around in there?

;)

Re-enable your first tty to make that message go away. If you didn't mess with it, then not sure why you're getting that message.

Uhh... Why would you do this?
