I am trying to install Solaris on a Anigma Pentium II motherboard with integrated AGP/Audio/DVD, plextor CDRW, 40 gig maxtor ide hd new, unpartioned.....no nic or modem in the box

system reads device configuration assistant from either Solaris 8 installation CD-ROM or Device Configuration Assistant floppy.....
when the sytem scans it keeps hanging on either "Windows Sound System Compatable" or "ADS Sound Blaster....I do not have a soundblaster card in this machine, it is on board sound......

could any of you please point me in the right direction......I am new to Solaris, please help me get this installed.....

thanks, michael

Never mind responding to this last post....

I just bought a Sun Ultra 1 machine with Solaris 8 installed on it.........

Had I known how thin the HCL was on Solaris 8 for Intel, and the low cost of SunSPARC machines, I would have/should have gone this route initially and not bothered with Solaris for Intel......live and learn !

I'll be back soon to talk about Solaris !

Great...

How much did the Ultra 1 cost? (so I can price compare)

And did it come with a monitor?

epseps,
the Sun ultra 1 was $150. incl Sun keyboard, mouse (you must use sun kb & mouse)...170mhz processor (RISC), 128RAM, 4gig HD, CDROM.......No monitor with this setup but also included was a SUN 13W3 vga/svga adapter which allows you to use a non-SUN monitor with this machine. I plan to share a monitor using a Belkin KVM switch.

There are lots of SUN machines out there for less than this, many selling the SPARC box alone for under 100.

How much are Ulra 5's going for these days? I've checked a couple of sites, and they all seem to be in excess of $1500, but I'm guessing you didn't go through a Sun reseller...where is a good place to start looking?

Solaris 8 for Intel works best on *older* hardware than Linux supports.

In fact, some hardware well-supported by Linux (IDE controller cards for example, especially RAID) isn't supported by Solaris/IA-32 at all (my HPT-370A came up dry in Solaris, though RedHat 7.2 supports it).

Surprisingly (or rather UNsurprisingly) both RH and Solaris came up nearly empty in support for my ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV (fortunately, Xi Graphics (http://www.xig.com) supples the Summit WX-Platinum Demo accerated server for both RH and Solaris that works fantastically with my 8500DV), while 4Front Technologies (http://www.opensound.com) gets my Audigy up and running in both OSes.
