I have tried installing both version 4.0 and 4.5 on this computer using two different CD-ROM drives and Hard drives. When it gets to the part of the installation where it begins extracting the packages, it just stops and freezes up. Wussup wit dat? Anybody know a workaround for this, or what I am doing wrong???

Many possibilities:
1) Bad CD
2) Unclean hard disk or in bad format not ready for packages to be extracted to
3) Hardware conflict problem
4) Wrong initial kernel config problem
5) Using Advanced install without reading the handbook, thus clueless on the exact procedure in appropriate order

To narrow down the possibilities try FTP install instead. Read the Install.txt to find out what needs to be done on that.

Okay, I managed to get the system running by doing a FTP install, but now I want to install Gnome and some of the files it is looking for appear to not be on the only FTP mirror that seems to work "ftp.freebsd.org". And when I try to mount the cdrom to snag the files from there, it freezes the computer everytime. I've tried with two different cdroms and I burned three different copies on three different brands of cd media. What up wit dat? :(

I managed to get it running. The stupid "gnomeprint" package is no longer available on the ftp server for some un-Godly reason, so the dependecies were getting all hosed. I ended up installing the package manually and then everything worked fine. PS - Gnome runs fairly well on this machine believe it or not. Is there another WM that you would recommend?

Blackbox or fluxbox, especially on hardware as limited as yours...
