*gushing* I think I'm in love!

I just got this server built and installed last night. I got the freeBSD4.5 mini ISO and it worked like a charm.
The machine is intended to be my dev-box but the mini ISO didn't have everything I was looking for. Then I found the magic of /usr/ports/*

Simply Amazing. cd /usr/ports/java && make && make install && make clean

Now for mySQL, php and some coffee!

Yup, the ports system is great. Make sure to keep it up to date with cvsup (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html), a great tool to keep FreeBSD up to date. Also take a look at portupgrade (http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2001/11/29/Big_Scary_Daemons.html) for updating previously installed ports and packages and keeping the package database clean.

Also, to install you can actually simplify the command to cd /usr/ports/whatever && make install clean, or make install distclean which will remove the source tarball from the /usr/ports/distfiles directory as well as cleaning up the temporary build files in the 'work' directory.

fscking sweet....

doing a /usr/local/bin/cvsup -g -L 2 /etc/cvsupfile right now.

I haven't been this excited [about an OS] since I first tried Linux.
