I tried installing it once, but when it tried toconfigure X, I ran in to some trouble. I have an Nvidia Geforce II, and I thought the "nvidia" driver was there, but when it tested it, the installation hung up.
If I install it with out X, can I compile in Nvidia's new drivers? How about XFree86 4.x?

Thanks, I am real newbie.
~goon12.

P.S. I am also running a dual boot with Mandrake 7.2, and Windows 98SE. Will I run into any boot trouble if I throw Solaris in the boot mix?

Solaris doesn't belong on an Intel

Solaris on Intel just sucks....i have it and i really really dont like it at all...the hardware support sucks (especially video) ugh...its really not worth it.

From all I've read, I think I'm the only one who hasn't had any problems with Solaris x86. It just does not crash, my last reboot was 3 months ago and that was because of a power outage (I really should go buy a UPS). I use the computer as a mail/webserver, and it keeps chugging away.

So just for the record, Solaris x86 works absolutely great for me.

X might have some generic nvidia support, but you won't get resolution like you would for linux. Solaris doesn't seem to really care about the interface, IMO.

I got my TNT2 Ultra working in Solaris fine, at 1024x768 resolution. I don't know if it uses the same driver as the Gefore 2, though. It was so long ago that I used Solaris, so I probably wouldn't be able to help you anyway. I couldn't get my network card working, so I dumped it.

I'm with Bully. Solaris does NOT belong on an intel box. If you just wanna learn UNIX it's ok, but now you can get an Ultra 5 or one of those new blade 100 boxes for a grand.

<blatant self-promotion>
There's a new Solaris 8 NHF you might wanna check out. It goes over this very situation, and I WROTE IT!!! :) </blatant self-promotion>

I was so excited on trying out Solaris on my box ... untill it told me my hardware wasn't supported. I about went nuts because of the time it took to get that iso!! :mad:

heh if they wanted to port solaris to intel they should of atleast got more support for hardware etc..

i hope the darwin os is also looking in to that so they dont run into a problem when they finish porting macosx to intel.
