What are the detail steps to get my Nvidia recognized at something more than a generic card.

Install XF86 4.x.x from the ports collection.
There is no Nvidia driver for BSD like the one Nvidia provides for Linux, so you're stuck with the 'nv' driver that comes with X. That is at least until the port of the Nvidia's Linux drivers to FreeBSD is complete. You can find info about it here: http://nvidia.netexplorer.org/ ... though the page seems to be down at the moment.
