Solaris is setup for there own hardware. The i386 version is really only for training purposes. Not for use in the production world.

solaris is just not supposed to be used on...

1. non sun hardware
2. home user workstations

it's non-free unix. i mean, you don't even get compilers with solaris! and you have to install all the gnu utils yourself... boring...

i mean, if you want hardcore unix, without the garbage... get a bsd.

VooDoo 3000 (I used the 3500) - can be used, but you need to use the generic svga driver and you only get a 600x800 resolution @ 16 colors. Not very fun, but I used it like that for awhile before I got the Matrox G400 Max.

Yeah Solaris sucks for pretty much anything but production server use.
But it pays well, so I'm learnin it ;)

Yeah, it does pay well.

I have one question, though - what the hell are you gonna do with a Voodoo card on a solaris box even if you DO get it working?

Go see the new Solaris for penguins NHF - I talk about this in there.
