Hey all, been using Slackware for a couple of years now, and I just got done inheriting a older HP XU server from a friend. The server has 2 pentium pro 200mhz cpus, 64 megs of ram, and a 10 gig scsi hard drive. I wanted to use this machine as a server, such as html , or ftp, or maybe even a game server. So my question is, for someone who is efficient in linux, which OS do you recommend installing on this server? FreeBSD 4.2 or Solaris 8?

What I would do:

Install Solaris 8 and tell us how it works on that machine (I don't know if anyone has posted about installing Solaris on a dual processor x86 yet).

Then I'd wipe off Solaris and install FreeBSD 4.2 and see if that had what I wanted (I am fairly new to *BSD) and play with it until I figured it out.

If I was in a hurry or FreeBSD didn't work the way I planned then I'd go with Linux.

Have fun.
